What Its Like To Be A Professional Performer

To be a professional entertainer/performer/magician is very different than any other job or hobby. The hours, days, months and years of practice needed in order to perfect an effect is extraordinary. I started doing magic when I was 5, but really got serious when I was 15. I would sit in my room for hours reading books, watching videos (no DVDs were available yet) and practice, practice and practice some more.

I eventually got good enough to where people would pay me money to show them my tricks. That money would go right back into buying new videos and books. It was an amazing process and I was/am so blessed to be able to pick apart an effect, tear it down to its rawest form and show it to a group of people and make them have an unforgettable experience.

Some people paint, some ride bikes, surf, sky dive, etc. I perform magic for people. It’s what I’m good at and I love it.

My performing style, that of a brash, mildly offensive bear-like guy that you ultimately can’t help to love and admire is my true personality. When people meet me for the first time they often think, and most say, “He’s a a**hole.” Then we spend some time together and they love me. I think that most entertainers fail because they don’t connect well enough with their audience. It doesn’t matter how many people are in the crowd, every single audience member should feel they are that performers best friend. That is my goal with my magic, I hope you all feel it too!

Why Is Entertainment So Expensive?

I’m often asked why entertainment shows are so expensive. And it seems that most entertainers don’t give their potential clients a clear idea as to why. So here, I’ll tell you why it seems that my shows are more expensive. I’ll admit that my shows are often on the high end of what typical San Diego based magicians charge. But, with ranges from $1,500 to $3,000 my shows deliver much more than other entertainer’s shows.

I’ve been performing for over 10 years. I did my first paid show with Sony. It has taken me over 10 years of constant performing and practice to get to the level that I am. You see, my shows are not the typical show you can get from any number of other entertainers. My show is a show. By that, I mean that there is so much more to my shows than getting up and performing one trick after another. A huge problem in magic and entertainment is making a show feel like a show. My shows have a plot line and a definable character. My character is that of a slightly obscure, brash guy who you end up loving at the end of the show. I’m constantly told about how people first meet me and feel like I’m very brash and intimidating then after a few minutes together they love me. It’s a very weird feeling, but my character on stage is the same in real life. I’m just a big teddy bear.

Anyway, I’ve worked very hard at defining my character and that has lead to great success for me. Most magicians go to a magic shop and buy magic tricks. Anyone can do that, but the fact that I work on routines for longer than a year before even introducing them in a show is why I can charge more.

Also, I understand what the challenges are of planning an event or working at a comedy club is. My job is to make the comedy club and event organizer look awesome! By performing a quality show, using tried and true routines, my clients continually book me for repeat performances.
